According to Sony, the Playstation 4 might well already be under development and it looks like they will be dialling it back a notch on ambitious hardware advancement, which ultimately cost Sony so much money in the early life of the current console.
Sony spoke to investors shortly after announcing that they had lost approximately $3.1 billion dollars over the course of the past fiscal year. Despite the overall company’s staggering losses, the video game division posted a profit of $435 million during the same fiscal year. CFO and executive president of Sony, Masaru Kato, revealed that a portion of their research and development costs will be utilised on a brand-new home gaming console.
“The PS3 still has product life, but this is a platform business,” he said. “So for the future platform, when will we introduce it? What product? I can not discuss that. But development work is already underway.”
We’ve already known for some time now that Sony will be offering their customers a free month of PSN Plus in the wake of PSN and other Sony services being hacked and brought down for a considerable period of time as part of their welcome back program in addition to other goodies. What we didn’t know is just what free games Playstation 3 and PSP owners would get. But we do now as Sony have released details on what those games will be.
Playstation 3 owners can choose from the following list:
- Dead Nation
- Little Big Planet
- Super Stardust HD
- Wipeout HD + Fury
PSP Owners will have a choice of the following:
- Little Big Planet
- Killzone Liberation
- ModNation Racers
- Pursuit Force
In addition to the above, various “On Us” movie rentals will be free to download for a weekend. The list and which weekend specifically is yet to be named.
Sony, in a press release, has just detailed the PSN’s future in light of the recent outage and external intrusion that caused it.
Sony has implemented a variety of new security measures to provide greater protection of personal information. Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI) and its third-party experts have conducted extensive tests in verifying the strength of the rebuilt PSN and Qriocity services.
PSN users will have to download a new firmware and reset their passwords before they can get back online using the PSN. With this in mind, Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and SNEI plan to start a phased roll out by region of the services shortly. The initial phase of the roll out will include the following:
- Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation®3 (PS3) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems. This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games
- Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
- Access to account management and password reset
- Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
- PlayStation Home
- Friends List
- Chat Functionality
However, the PSN Store will still not be functional. Sony has not given a time-frame on when it will be made available, only saying that all PlayStation Network services will be back up later by the end of the month.
Sony has also created a new position of Chief Information Security Officer that will directly report to Shinji Hasejima, Chief Information Officer of Sony Corporation. This new job position has been made to add a new position of expertise in accountability for customer data protection and also to supplement existing information security personnel.
The new security measures implemented include the following:
- Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks
- Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
- Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns
- Implementation of additional firewalls
The press release also states that Sony has “expedited an already planned move of the system to a new data center in a different location that has been under construction and development for several months.” In addition to downloading a new firmware and resetting user passwords, that password can only be changed on the same PS3 where the account was activated or through validated email confirmation.
While Sony insists that there is no evidence that credit card data was taken, the company will provide a complimentary offering to assist users in enrolling in identity theft protection services and/or similar programs. Further details will be made available in each region shortly.
Sony will roll out a PlayStation Network and Qriocity “Welcome Back” program to be offered worldwide. It will be tailored to specific markets to provide customers with a selection of service options and “premium content” as an expression of Sony’s gratitude for the consumers’ “support, patience and loyalty.”
Central components of the “Welcome Back” program will include the following:
- Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.
- All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.
- Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.
Sony also says that additional “Welcome Back” entertainment and service offerings will be rolled out over the coming weeks.
PSN will be back online this coming week, or at least a majority part of it will be functional. PSN users will get PSN+ and other unannounced content for their troubles.
Is this enough for the customers who have been affected by all this? Sound off in the comments.
Potentially good news it seems for Playstation 3 gamers, as representatives from major credit card companies such as MasterCard, American Express and Well-Fargo have all confirmed that they “haven’t seen any unauthorised activity relating to Sony”.
The representatives speaking to Bloomberg, also said that so far, no unauthorized purchases have occurred from the credit card info that was compromised on the latest attack on the PSN which started on April 19.
Certainly some good news that Sony desperately needs, considering they are being targeted by a class action lawsuit and several government regulatory bodies are looking into the breach. Please keep in mind though that although they are saying there has been no suspicious activity now (for those companies at least) that doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be over the next few weeks. Touch wood.

Sony tonight issued a statement saying the PlayStation Network outage is due to an “external intrusion” but did not clarify beyond that. A timetable for when PSN will be up and running again was also not provided.
Hacker group Anonymous said today they are not claiming responsibility for this particular outage, however.
The statement in full from Senior Director of Corporate Communications Patrick Seybold can be read below:
An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th.Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.
To our Playstation 3 users, what have you been doing to keep yourselves occupied during the outage? Let us know in the comments below.
According to multiple reports today, Nintendo will reveal a new console at E3 this coming June.
Game Informer first reported the details, saying the console is capable of running games at “HD resolutions.” Our sources have said the the console is significantly more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and that Nintendo’s intent is to recapture the hardcore market. Another source said it is capable of 1080p resolutions.
Nintendo is reportedly showing the console to publishers to garner interest for a late 2012 launch.
Additional sources tell IGN that Nintendo will release a pre-announcement this month with a full reveal expected at E3 and that the console will be backwards compatible with current Wii software.
A report from CVG states the new Nintendo console will use an all-new controller – not an updated Wii controller – with sources saying it will have a built-in screen. Additional sources informed IGN the screen has touch capability.
Drop us a comment and let us know what you think Nintendo has to do to win back these so called hardcore gamers.
Having success in Dragon Age 2 can depend on how you build your party. If your companions aren’t fighting at their optimal capacity, you just might find things a lot tougher (well, depending on difficulty). While Hawke can have two specializations, choose his/her armour, your companions are a bit more set into specific roles. Good party harmony will make your life a lot easier, while dungeon crawling. The original article can be found over at Greywardens.com. I’ll place a little ‘menu’ at the bottom of each page, that’ll help you navigate the article better and get to those companions you care the most about.
We’ll start off with the two least important companions (Courtesy of no specialization and being unavailable for large parts of the game), in your siblings Bethany and Carver.
If you’re playing as a warrior or rogue, Bethany will be the first character you get and the first mage you get until you recruit either Anders or Merrill. However, she’ll only be a temporary companion, making your choice to build her somewhat irrelevant for the majority of the game. However, we’ll indulge.
Bethany, in the early game, probably best serves you as a straight up damage dealer. She doesn’t have a specialization to worry about so you can just pour all her point directly into a skill tree. Since she starts with Fireball, you’ve got a head start in the Elemental tree so that’s probably where you’ll want to stay.
In the early game (probably with your first level up), you should invest in Heal, for obvious reasons. Until you get Anders, she’ll be your only option to heal. And unless you rush ahead and nab Anders as the first quest you take on in Act I, this will be able to help you out.
Nab Winter’s Grasp, Cone of Cold, Firestorm and Pyromancer, all in the Elemental Tree with the goal of working your way up to Elemental Mastery.
In the middle if you need to grab an outside skill (due to level restrictions), some quick support choices will add some extra oomph to your party. One-and-done skills like Elemental Weapons or Heroic Aura will suffice, or grab another attack spell in Spirit Bolt in the Spirit tree.
You probably won’t get too many more skill points with her than that before she’s unavailable for you to use. If/when she comes back later and if you really want to use her for old times’ sake, depending on your party makeup you may want to grab a couple disabling spells in the Entropy Tree, or focus on more support-type roles with Creation Spells or Arcane. Or you can go even further into the realm of pure damage by nabbing some primal spells too. But really, that late in the game, your supporting cast should greatly outshine Bethany.
Carver, like Bethany, is temporary for your party and only if you’re a mage. Also, like Bethany, he is best used by focusing on raw damage-dealing early.
Start Carver out immediately in the Two-hand tree, nabbing your early skills like Mighty Blow, Giant’s Reach and Sunder. You’ll eventually want to get Scythe and Whirlwind too when they become available and then probably stick to upgrading those skills as they become available.
If you plan on using only Carver as your warrior early, get Taunt, a necessity to help him control threat on the battlefield. If you want to branch out a bit into other trees the best option is probably the Vanguard Tree. By picking up Might and Control (which are unfortunately mutually exclusive) you can unlock Cleave, which will double his damage output. Or, you can stick in the Warmonger tree and pick up other skills like the sustainable Bravery to increase his power in crowds or go toward Tremor for some AOE knockdown.
However, since he’s unavailable most of the game, your best bet is to just pump up his two-handed skills as far as you can while you have him. If/when he comes back later in the game, that would be at time to branch out especially into the Vanguard Tree where he can pick strong passive skills like Destroyer and Massacre to really add up his killing power.
