Modern Warfare 3

Yesterday was Activision’s investors conference call and they decided not to reveal any details on the next instalment of the Call of Duty franchise for this year, as some had expected they would. Instead, it looks like Call of Duty fans can look forward to a reveal through a combination of E3 and a magazine reveal; Activision have said that details on the series’ future will be forthcoming in the coming weeks.

Kotaku has reported claims that this year’s game will indeed be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, as many have assumed up until now. Sources have indicated to them that the story will pick off where the last Modern Warfare titles left off and could include a return for fan favourites of Soap MacTavish and Captain John Price. The game is also said to feature a “much larger, epic scale” as the potential for World War III looms on the horizon.

One of they key changes will be in the game’s “large, urban destructible environments” that sound more like what you’d expect from the newest Battlefield than Call of Duty. Battlefield 3 will, like its most recent predecessors, feature destructible environments, so if true this will put the two games on more even footing as far as that aspect of things goes.

In the past, the annual Call of Duty releases have alternated between Infinity Ward and Treyarch, and this year will be no different. Infinity Ward (what’s left of it) will be developing Modern Warfare 3 and as Kotaku notes (and most of us already suspect), will be supported by Sledgehammer Games and possibly Raven Software, both of which have already been identified as contributors to the franchise.

One of the only things Activision has been willing to confirm about this year’s Call of Duty to date is that the Beachhead content announced earlier this year will play a big role. However, that doesn’t mean any of the existing content you’d typically see in a Call of Duty release will be stripped out and sold back to players. As it was put during the conference call yesterday, “We are not attempting to monetize or take any experience away that currently counts as part of the value proposition of buying the game.”
